Step Three: What have I done?

With the engine now stripped down it was time to pull apart the rest of the bike. The aim is to reduce the M21 into its component parts and send them off for painting, chrome plating and whatever else needs outside attention.

This is the point in any restoration where you really do wonder what you have done. After all, the bike was running. Now it's just a heap of greasy parts.

Wheels apart
And finally, that job everyone avoids. De-lacing the wheels. I can never quite bring myself to de-lace with bolt cutters so I set to and undo all the spokes and save them for later (like all the rest of the junk in the shed). A phone call to those wonderful people at Central Wheel Components in the UK and two sets of lovely stainless spokes and nipples are ordered. I do like my bling!


As always, I have taken copious photos of each wheel (from both sides) and drawn diagrams of the lacing pattern just to be sure! I intend to lace and true my own wheels so I have also recorded the offset of each wheel. Forgetting to record the offset is one of those things you only ever do once. Touch wood.
